Beach and Surf Classic

The Rock at Leo Carrillo

The idea of the Beach and Surf Classic started back in 1993. I was driving past San Onofre one afternoon and caught myself remembering that as a kid my family would go on weekend camping trips there. We would pile into the station wagon with travel trailer in tow and head to San Onofre throughout the summer. There were all these families—good friends—that would meet there to surf and hang out.

Remembering that tradition, I realized I wanted to create something similar.

The first year was at San Onofre. Since then, the party moved to San Elijo for a couple years, then to Doheny, and finally it has settled at Leo Carrillo State Beach. Early on, there were no kids—heck, we were still kids. Now there are kids everywhere—in fact they outnumber the adults. It used to be beer and pop tarts. Lately I’ve seen wine, filet and even lobster tails. Some things change, but some things stay the same. It’s still all about people visiting with old friends and making new ones. It’s all about enjoying a relaxing weekend at the beach—playing bocce ball, volleyball, surfing or just hanging out. It’s all about tradition! – Kelly Blatt

The BSC T-Shirt

Every year t-shirts are available to each of the campers. Over time the designs have changed, but the spirit of the Beach and Surf Classic has always been maintained. Bragging rights come to those who own all of the t-shirts. It’s their only proof that they have attended every Beach and Surf Classic.

The BSC Awards

A number of years ago we started recognizing campers with some unofficial awards—people who traveled the furthest or who have never missed a trip, etc.
Well we got serious about it and in 2002 gave out trophies. Not your typical trophies — these are hand-sculpted works of art. Thank you to Derek McDonald for his creative design and masterful artwork.

The Ohana Trophy

We wanted to create an award that would be passed on from year to year—kind of like a Survivor immunity idol. But we wanted it to be something a family could win together as a team, not an individual person. So we came up with the Survivor-themed Ohana Games. It turned out better than we had hoped, as families really pulled together and the competitiveness really came out.

Where in the World
The Beach and Surf Classic T-shirt. It’s iconic. And it travels well. Kind of like Flat Stanley.
Here’s your chance to document your own travel adventures with your BSC T-shirt. Submit your photos of your family “representing” to beachandsurfclassic@gmail.com along with a brief description of where in the world the photo was taken, and we’ll post your picture here on the site.

Travel locations could be fun, unusual, amazing, or far, far, away. Maybe it’s while you’re canoeing down a river in the Ozarks; maybe it’s while you’re on the Eiffel Tower; maybe it’s while hanging with your new friend Kanani at a shave-ice stand on the North Shore. Wherever you are, make sure you’re wearing your BSC T-shirt and take a picture. Contest winners for multiple categories each year. Have fun!
